The Kashtan (Russian: Каштан, English: Chestnut) close-in weapon system (CIWS) is a modern naval air defence gun-missile system deployed by the Russian Navy. It is found on the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, Kirov class battlecruisers, Neustrashimy class, People's Liberation Army Navy Sovremenny class destroyers and Indian Talwar class frigates and other modern designs. Most typically deployed as a combined gun and missile system, it provides defence against anti-ship missiles, anti-radar missiles and guided bombs. The system can also be employed against fixed or rotary wing aircraft or even surface vessels such as fast attack boats or targets on shore. The Phalanx CIWS is a close-in weapon system for defending against anti-ship missiles. It was designed and manufactured by the General Dynamics Corporation, Pomona Division[4] (now a part of Raytheon). Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm (0.79 in) Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx is used by multiple Navies around the world, namely the Royal Navy and the United States Navy on every class of surface combat ship, by the United States Coast Guard aboard its Hamilton-class and Legend-class cutters and the navies of 16 allied nations. A land based variant known as C-RAM has recently been deployed in a short range missile defense role, to counter incoming rockets and artillery fire.[6] Because of their distinctive barrel-shaped radome and their automated nature of operation, Phalanx CIWS units are sometimes nicknamed "R2-D2" after the famous droid from Star Wars,[7][8] and in the Royal Navy as Daleks, after the aliens from Doctor Who.[citation needed] The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. It is larger than the next 13 largest navies combined in terms of battle fleet tonnage.[5][6] The U.S. Navy also has the world's largest carrier fleet, with 10 in service, one under construction (two planned), and two in reserve. The service has 317,054 personnel on active duty and 109,671 in the Navy Reserve. It operates 286 ships in active service and more than 3,700 aircraft.[3] The Russian Navy (Russian: Военно-морской Флот Российской Федерации (ВМФ России), tr. Voyenno-morskoy Flot Rossiyskoy Federatsii (VMF Rossii), lit. Military-Maritime Fleet of the Russian Federation) is the naval arm of the Russian military. The present Russian Navy was formed in January 1992, succeeding the Navy of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which had itself succeeded the Soviet Navy following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. The first Russian Navy was established by Peter the Great (Peter I) in October 1696. Ascribed to Peter I is the oft quoted statement: "A ruler that has but an army has one hand, but he who has a navy has both." The symbols of the Russian Navy, the St. Andrew's flag and ensign (seen to the right), and most of its traditions were established personally by Peter I. Russia Listeni/ˈrʌʃə/ or /ˈrʊʃə/ (Russian: Россия, tr. Rossiya; IPA: [rɐˈsʲijə] ( listen)), also officially known as the Russian Federation[10] (Russian: Российская Федерация, tr. Rossiyskaya Federatsiya; IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə fʲɪdʲɪˈrat͡sɨjə] ( listen)), is a country in northern Eurasia.[11] It is a federal semi-presidential republic, comprising 83 federal subjects. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk, and the US state of Alaska across the Bering Strait. At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area. Russia is also the world's ninth most populous nation with 143 million people as of 2012.[12] Extending across the whole of northern Asia and much of Europe, Russia spans nine time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. The United States of America (USA or U.S.A.), commonly referred to as the United States (US or U.S.) and America, is a federal republic[10][11] consisting of 50 states and a federal district. The 48 contiguous states and the federal district of Washington, D.C. are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is the northwestern part of North America, west of Canada and east of Russia which is across the Bering Strait in Asia, and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-North Pacific. The country also has five populated and nine unpopulated territories in the Pacific and the Caribbean. .

First broadcast 20170527 Khorgas KAZ Dry Port BBC World News Business -+- BBC New World of course own the copy rights of this. I can't find this on BBC web site... The BRI - Belt & Road Initiative - by PRC [China] is an ambitious plan straddling Asia to Europe. This is the gateway, or the heartbeat of the New Silk Road. -+- From PRC to GER - by sea it takes 45 days - by rail, 2 wks - by air? You don't want to know the cost. From PRC go high-value cargo like laptops & printers From GER, FRA go wines and high-grade meats. Since the rail gauges are different in PRC and KAZ/RUS, it takes 45 min to tsf the TEU containers from one train to another.

There is a single railroad following the Silk Road route, which linked Xian, China with the Roman Empire by way of Central Asia. Due to conflicting agendas, an international train route was never established. This documentary follows Ken Ogata on a journey to bring the Silk Road to life; starting in Turfan in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, he changes trains in the westernmost part of China, and proceeds on through Kazakhstan, Kyrgzstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and finally Turkey.

Representatives from Iran, Russia, and Turkey have started Syria ceasefire talks in the Kazakh capital, Astana. Both the Syrian government and the opposition have sent delegations to Astana. U-S and Jordanian representatives will be monitoring the process. The United Nations Security Council has already voiced support for a Syrian-led, Syrian-owned political process. Syria’s warring factions have held four rounds of negotiations in Kazakhstan since January in parallel to the U-N-mediated peace talks in Switzerland. During last month’s talks in Astana, Iran, Russia, and Turkey agreed on establishing de-escalation zones in Syria’s mainly militant-held areas. The deal, which came into force on May the fifth, called for the cessation of hostilities between Syria’s warring factions.
